Tactical analysis starts long before the first highlight. Analysts map how a team builds up, how it presses, and how it protects itself when possession is lost.
The three phases
Every match is usually broken into three phases:
- In possession — build-up shape, rotations and overloads.
- Out of possession — pressing height, compactness and cover shadows.
- Transitions — the seconds after the ball changes hands, where most clear chances are created.
What to watch
A useful habit is to pause any wide shot and count: how many players are behind the ball? That single number — the rest-defence count — predicts counter-attack risk better than most highlight reels.
Good analysis explains why a pattern repeats, not just that it happened once.
