The first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2026 season arrived on Tuesday night, and they did what first rankings are supposed to do: they started arguments everywhere. Undefeated Miami took the top spot, Georgia, Utah and defending national champion Indiana filled out the top four — and then the committee delivered its biggest surprise by placing Notre Dame 11th.
The Fighting Irish entered the week ranked No. 4 in the Associated Press poll. The selection committee saw them very differently, dropping them seven spots to the last team in the 12-team field. The reaction was immediate, and it sets up a Saturday showdown against No. 1 Miami that now feels like a playoff elimination game.
The top of the rankings
The committee's first top 25, released on 3 November, looks like this at the top:
- Miami (8-0)
- Georgia (7-1)
- Utah (8-0)
- Indiana (8-1)
- Alabama (6-2)
- Kentucky (7-1)
- Texas (6-2)
- UCLA (8-0)
- BYU (7-1)
- Ole Miss (6-2)
- Notre Dame (7-1)
- Ohio State (6-2)
Miami, the nation's only other undefeated team besides Utah and UCLA at the top, earned the No. 1 spot after an 8-0 start. Georgia and Utah followed, with Indiana — the defending champions — taking the fourth spot and the final first-round bye in the projected bracket.
The rankings will be updated weekly on Tuesdays until the final 12-team field is locked in on Sunday 6 December. There are four more in-season rankings to come after this first release, which means plenty can still change. But first impressions matter, and the committee has made its priorities clear.
Why Notre Dame fell to No. 11
The committee's message to Notre Dame was blunt, delivered by chairman Hunter Yurachek on television: the Irish do not have a signature win. Notre Dame is 7-1, but none of its seven victories have come against a team currently ranked in the committee's top 25. Its only loss came against BYU, 28-24, and BYU sits at No. 9 in these rankings.
That combination — no ranked wins, one ranked loss — proved costly, even though Notre Dame sits at No. 4 in the AP poll and No. 1 in ESPN's FPI rankings. The committee, it seems, values the resume over the eye test, at least in this first release.
The practical consequence is stark. If the season ended today, Notre Dame would be the last team in the field, travelling to No. 6 Kentucky in the first round, with the winner facing No. 3 Utah in the quarter-finals. One more loss would almost certainly end their playoff hopes, with remaining games against Boston College, SMU and Syracuse — none of them currently ranked — offering little chance to repair the resume.
Saturday is now a playoff game
Notre Dame hosts No. 1 Miami on Saturday, and the stakes could hardly be higher. A win over the Hurricanes would give the Irish exactly what the committee says they lack: a signature victory against the top-ranked team in the country, at home, in prime time.
A loss, on the other hand, would leave Notre Dame at 7-2 with no ranked wins and no realistic path back into the top 12. As one analysis put it after the rankings were released, the message from the committee was simple: win out, or else.
Miami travels to South Bend with its own motivation: a road win against a desperate Notre Dame side would strengthen its grip on the No. 1 seed.
The other surprises
Notre Dame was not the only talking point. Undefeated UCLA, at 8-0, was ranked only eighth — behind two-loss Alabama and Texas as well as one-loss Kentucky. Ohio State, ranked No. 11 in the AP poll and No. 2 in ESPN's FPI, was placed 12th by the committee, making the Buckeyes the first team out of the field despite their road win over Indiana on 17 October.
FAQ
Who is No. 1 in the first College Football Playoff rankings?
Undefeated Miami (8-0) tops the first rankings, followed by Georgia, Utah and defending champion Indiana.
Why is Notre Dame only ranked 11th?
Committee chairman Hunter Yurachek said Notre Dame lacks a signature win. The Irish are 7-1 but have no wins over teams currently in the committee's top 25, and their only loss came against No. 9 BYU.
What happens if Notre Dame beats Miami on Saturday?
A win over No. 1 Miami would give Notre Dame the signature victory the committee says it lacks and would greatly strengthen its case for a place in the 12-team field.
When is the final playoff field announced?
The committee will release weekly rankings on Tuesdays, with the final 12-team field announced on Sunday 6 December.
