Tom Nolan scored the biggest win of his career on Saturday night, stopping Renato Moicano by TKO at 1:28 of the third round in the main event of UFC Vegas 123 at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas.
The Australian lightweight extended his UFC winning streak to six and punched his ticket toward the division's top ten — but only after surviving the worst of Moicano's grappling and a second round that will be argued about for some time.
How the fight was won
Moicano, returning for the first time since submitting Chris Duncan in April, started exactly as he wanted. In the opening round he used his wrestling and jiu-jitsu to smother Nolan, taking the Australian's back and pursuing a rear-naked choke. Nolan defended his hands, stood up while carrying the Brazilian on his back, and kept resisting when he was dragged down again.
The second round followed the same pattern at first. Moicano secured another takedown and the body lock, and again went to work from back control. Then came the night's flashpoint: referee Dan Miragliotta ordered the fighters to stand up while Moicano still had back control and a body triangle in place.
The decision drew immediate criticism — journalist Ariel Helwani was among those to object to the restart, and fellow fighters reacted online, with the prevailing view that Moicano had been denied a dominant position. The restart changed the round completely. Nolan took over on the feet, hurt Moicano with punches and a big knee, and had the Brazilian barely surviving to the horn.
The third round settled it. Moicano attempted another takedown, but this time Nolan reversed into top position and landed the ground strikes that ended the contest — punches and elbows, with the referee warning Moicano to fight back before stepping in at 1:28.
The result in context
The official result is Tom Nolan def. Renato Moicano via TKO (punches and elbows), round three, 1:28. Nolan entered the bout on a five-fight winning streak, his most recent victory coming over Fares Ziam in June, and now moves to 13-1. Moicano falls to 21-8-1.
Nolan was also named one of the night's Performance of the Night winners, earning a $100,000 bonus, alongside Julian Erosa, Lucia Szabova and Joe Kropschot.
In the co-main event, Jacobe Smith kept his undefeated record intact with a decision win over veteran welterweight Randy Brown.
What Moicano said
Moicano was gracious in defeat. In his first written response after the fight, posted on X, the Brazilian congratulated Nolan and credited his opponent's defence, saying he had a terrible performance despite being well trained — he had managed to take Nolan's back but could not inflict damage because the Australian defended so well.
He did not address the referee's second-round stand-up in those messages. The result stands as a TKO win for Nolan, and the debate about the restart does not change that — but it will follow both men. For Nolan, the question is now who he faces next with a top-ten ranking in reach. For Moicano, the question is whether the grappling that has won him so many fights can still carry him against the division's best strikers when the positions do not produce a finish.
The rest of the card
Julian Erosa's knockout of JeongYeong Lee earned him a $100,000 Performance of the Night bonus in what was the veteran's UFC swan song. The Halloween card, broadcast on Paramount+, featured a run of finishes across the night.
