Canelo Alvarez is a world champion again. The Mexican superstar beat previously unbeaten Christian Mbilli by unanimous decision on Saturday night in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, reclaiming the WBC super middleweight title in his first fight for 13 months.
The judges scored the 12-round contest 115-112, 116-111 and 117-110, all in Alvarez's favour, after a fight in which the challenger's experience and counter-punching gradually took control from an aggressive but increasingly frustrated champion.
A measured return after 13 months out
This was Alvarez's first fight since his defeat by Terence Crawford in Las Vegas in September 2025 — a loss that cost him his undisputed super middleweight title — and his longest layoff of a professional career spanning more than two decades. He had left elbow surgery in the meantime, and at 36 there were open questions about how much of the old Canelo remained.
The early rounds did not answer them straight away. Mbilli, the Cameroon-born Frenchman fighting out of Montreal, came forward with the controlled pressure that has defined his unbeaten run, and the opening rounds were competitive. But as the fight wore on, Alvarez's accuracy in countering began to tell, and by the championship rounds he was pulling away on the scorecards.
The eighth round summed up Mbilli's frustration. Referee Hector Afu deducted a point from the champion for punches to the back of the head — after Alvarez had complained that it had happened three times — and from that point the Mexican was steadily running away with the fight.
From rounds nine to twelve, Alvarez was largely in cruise control. Mbilli finally let his hands go with more aggression in the final round, landing a right hand in the closing seconds, but it was too little, too late.
The numbers
Alvarez improves to 64-3-2 with 39 knockouts. Mbilli falls to 29-1-1 with 24 knockouts, suffering the first defeat of his professional career and losing the title on his first defence.
Mbilli had been elevated from interim champion to full WBC champion after Alvarez lost to Crawford, which set up Saturday's showdown as the first defence of his reign. Instead, the belt returns to the man who held it before.
The fight headlined The Ring's "Mexico Versus The World" card at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, broadcast live on DAZN pay-per-view.
What Canelo said — and what comes next
After the fight, Alvarez said he felt comfortable returning to the ring after such a long absence, and declined to call the shots for his next fight, saying he wants to take time off to spend with his family.
That is understandable after a year out and elbow surgery, but the division will not wait long. Alvarez is a world champion again, and the names around the super middleweight title — including a possible rematch with Crawford, who took the undisputed crown from him last year — will be discussed the moment he is ready to return.
For now, the significance of Saturday is simpler: at 36, after his longest layoff and a serious defeat, Canelo Alvarez proved he can still beat a younger, unbeaten world champion over 12 rounds. The performance was not vintage — it was measured, at times cagey, and Mbilli's pressure made it competitive early — but the second half was a demonstration of ring intelligence and defensive awareness, the qualities that have defined his career.
The undercard
On the undercard, Rafael Espinoza retained his WBO featherweight title as a cut stopped Ricardo Blandon in round three, and Carl Jammes Martin beat David Picasso by split decision.
