Premier League Matchweek 9 arrives with the title race already taking shape. Manchester City and Arsenal sit level on 21 points at the top, Brighton are the surprise package in third, and Liverpool — six points behind Arsenal — get their chance to close the gap at Anfield on Sunday. Before that, Saturday brings Chelsea against Manchester United at lunchtime and Manchester City against Brighton in the afternoon.
The weekend runs from Saturday, October 31 to Monday, November 2, with Liverpool vs Arsenal the headline fixture on Sunday at 16:30 GMT.
The title race at Anfield
After eight games, the table is tight at the top. Manchester City lead on goal difference with 21 points (seven wins, one defeat, +11), Arsenal are second on the same 21 points (+8), Brighton are third on 16, Liverpool fourth on 15 and Chelsea fifth on 13.
The mathematics of Sunday are simple. A Liverpool win cuts the gap to Arsenal from six points to three. An Arsenal win stretches it to nine — a serious early-season statement from the champions. A draw keeps things as they are, with City able to pull clear if they beat Brighton on Saturday.
Liverpool arrive in strong form, having won their last five matches in all competitions, including a 2-0 win over Brighton and a penalty shootout win over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. Their last league defeat was the 3-0 home loss to Manchester City on October 11.
Arsenal's injury crisis
Arsenal travel to Anfield badly stretched. Bukayo Saka is out with a quad injury picked up against Bayern Munich, and Mikel Arteta has said the winger will be out for weeks. William Saliba, the centre-back, has not played at all this season because of a back injury.
The problems do not stop there. Sixteen-year-old Max Dowman is suspended for three matches after being sent off for violent conduct in the Carabao Cup defeat at Fleetwood Town on Tuesday — Arsenal's appeal was rejected by the FA, so he misses Liverpool, Hull City and Newcastle United and returns against Manchester City on November 29. He remains available for Champions League games.
There is better news elsewhere. Declan Rice, Riccardo Calafiori and Christos Tzolis all trained on Friday, and Arteta said they should be available if they complete Saturday's session. Noni Madueke, who missed the Fleetwood game with an ankle problem, is still a doubt — Arteta said on Friday that the club did not yet know whether he could complete a full training session.
Liverpool's own absentees
Liverpool have problems of their own. Jeremie Frimpong (thigh), Hugo Ekitike (achilles), Giovanni Leoni (knee) and Conor Bradley (knee) are all out. Dominik Szoboszlai (thigh) is close to returning and could be back in the matchday squad, while Victor Munoz (knee) is a doubt but may also return.
The absences on both sides mean the game may be decided by depth. Arsenal's attack has already had to adapt without Saka, and Liverpool's midfield has had to cope without Szoboszlai. Sunday will test both squads' second choices in the biggest game of the season so far.
Chelsea vs Manchester United: pressure at both ends
Saturday opens at Stamford Bridge at 12:30 GMT, where Chelsea host Manchester United. Both clubs come into the game under pressure, but for different reasons.
Chelsea are fifth on 13 points, but they lost 2-0 at home to Tottenham last weekend and then went out of the Carabao Cup on penalties at Liverpool on Wednesday. United are in a deeper hole: 16th in the table on seven points, one point above the relegation zone and winless in eight games in all competitions. Manager Michael Carrick is under serious pressure, and a defeat at Stamford Bridge would deepen the crisis.
Manchester City vs Brighton: the champions' test
Later on Saturday, at 15:00 GMT, Manchester City host Brighton at the Etihad. City are top on goal difference despite losing 2-1 at Aston Villa last weekend — their first league defeat of the season. Brighton are third on 16 points and have scored 23 league goals, more than any other team, although they drew a blank for the first time this season in the 2-0 defeat at Liverpool.
Brighton have already shown they can hurt the big clubs, and City's defence will be tested by the league's most prolific attack. A Brighton win would be the result of the weekend; a City win keeps them top and piles pressure on Arsenal before Sunday.
The rest of the weekend
Saturday's other fixtures: Bournemouth vs Leeds United (15:00), Brentford vs Nottingham Forest (15:00), Coventry City vs Sunderland (15:00), Hull City vs Ipswich Town (15:00), Tottenham Hotspur vs Crystal Palace (17:30) and Aston Villa vs Fulham (20:00). The weekend closes on Monday, November 2, with Newcastle United vs Everton at 20:00 GMT.
Wolves sack Pereira after a winless start
Off the pitch, the weekend's other big story is at the bottom of the table. Wolves sacked head coach Vitor Pereira this week after a winless start to the season — ten league games, just two points, bottom of the table and eight points from safety. The 3-0 defeat at Fulham was the final straw, only 45 days after Pereira had signed a new three-year contract.
Pereira is the fourth Premier League manager to be sacked this season, after Nuno Espirito Santo, Graham Potter and Ange Postecoglou. Under-21 coach James Collins and under-18 coach Richard Walker are taking training while the club looks for a successor. It is the second season in a row that Wolves have failed to win any of their opening ten league games.
