Trabzonspor and Monaco: the perfect records
One of the stories of the league phase so far is how many teams have started perfectly — eight of them have two wins from two. Trabzonspor are one of them, boosted by the outstanding production of their attacking players, most notably three-goal Djú Franculino. Freiburg, their Matchday 3 opponents, provide a welcome challenge after a difficult start.
Monaco are another of the perfect eight, and their young talents stole the show on Matchday 2 as they sank Freiburg 3-0 — 20-year-old Paris Brunner, 22-year-old Lamine Camara and 23-year-old Ansu Fati scored the three goals. Their Matchday 3 opponents, Nordsjælland, have drawn both of their matches so far, the latest against a CSKA Sofia side who Monaco narrowly defeated on the opening night.
Belgian side Sint-Truidense are also perfect after two games, and one of just two teams yet to concede a goal. "If we bring this fire, we can be a very good team," promised defender Robert-Jan Vanwesemael after victory at Midtjylland.
Brighton at Getafe, Ajax at Midtjylland
Brighton travel to Getafe in the late slot, and the hosts have defensive improvement high on their agenda after conceding five to Lugano in a home defeat on Matchday 2. They have their work cut out against Brighton's high-powered attack — although the Seagulls were held to a goalless draw at Jablonec last time out, after opening the campaign with a 4-0 win over Kauno Žalgiris.
Ajax's trip to Midtjylland is the pick of the early games. Ajax bounced back from their Matchday 1 disappointment — a 2-1 defeat at Hajduk Split — to beat Atalanta 2-0 in Amsterdam, a result that bred confidence for goal scorer Tolu Arokodare. Winless Midtjylland await, the Danish side hoping to rediscover their mojo after a draw at Egnatia and a home defeat by Sint-Truidense. "In football there are days when you just don't hit it," said captain Rasmus Kristensen after that defeat.
The scoring record in sight
Following a Matchday 2 double, Panathinaikos forward Cyriel Dessers is level with Lech Poznań's Mikael Ishak as the leading scorer in Conference League history, with 13 goals each. Dessers gets his next chance to move clear when Panathinaikos, who lead the league-phase table on six points, welcome CSKA Sofia on Thursday night.
