The Vancouver Whitecaps took control of the Western Conference on a record-breaking night at BC Place, beating San Diego FC 4-1 on Wednesday, October 28 — and the headline belonged to Brian White, who scored the 100th MLS goal of his career. With two regular-season games left, Vancouver lead the West by four points and need just one more win to secure the No. 1 seed, home-field advantage through the playoffs, and a place in the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup. Here is how the night unfolded, and what it means for the MLS Cup playoff race.
The night in Vancouver: 4-1, and a club record
Vancouver's four goals took the Whitecaps to 67 for the season, smashing the club record for goals in an MLS regular season with two games still to spare.
Summer signing Aleksa Cvetković got things started early, scoring his first MLS goal in the 24th minute. White then headed home just before half-time to double the lead — his 18th league goal of the campaign — and Ryan Gauld extended the scoreline to 3-0 early in the second half, heading in a ball from Rayan Elloumi. Young Ecuadorian star Bruno Caicedo added the exclamation point with the record-breaking 67th goal in the 76th minute, finishing off a fast break with his sixth tally of the season. San Diego's Onni Valakari pulled one back on a header in the 83rd minute, but the night belonged to Vancouver.
White's 100th: a milestone years in the making
White's first-half goal was his 100th career MLS goal, making him the 17th player in league history to reach the mark. The former Red Bull New York SuperDraft pick has come into his own since moving to Vancouver in 2021, and he now has 98 goals as a Whitecap across all competitions. He is enjoying a career-best season, and the milestone ended a five-game scoring drought.
"These things are nice, but we want to win the MLS Cup. I want to win the MLS Cup. That's first and foremost on my mind," White said after the game, via the Associated Press. A year on from reaching the MLS Cup and Concacaf Champions Cup finals, the Whitecaps are looking to take a step further in 2026 — and White's focus is on the trophy, not the personal landmark.
The West race: one win from the top seed
Vancouver (17-8-7) lead the Western Conference with 58 points, and the gap grew on Wednesday because second-placed FC Dallas lost 2-0 to the Columbus Crew earlier in the day. The Whitecaps now need just one more win to secure the top seed in the West, which brings home-field advantage in the playoffs at least up until the conference finals — and possibly through the MLS Cup final on December 18.
They will have two chances to do it: they travel to Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday, November 1 (3:30 p.m. ET, Apple TV), before hosting CF Montréal on Decision Day, November 7. Vancouver finished second in the West last year and went on to lose the MLS final to Miami — this time, they want the top seed and the home comfort that comes with it.
Elsewhere in the playoff race
San Diego (8-13-11) were eliminated from playoff contention by the loss, and their winless streak stretched to ten games (0-5-5). Their last win was a 3-1 decision over the LA Galaxy on August 22.
In the East, the Philadelphia Union have clinched a playoff place, while Atlanta United have been eliminated — Atlanta host Toronto on November 1 in their final home game of the season. With Decision Day approaching on November 7, the remaining playoff places in both conferences will be settled in the final round of games.
