Cricket is unusual among global sports: the same players contest three formats that reward almost opposite skills.
The three formats
- Test cricket — two innings per side over up to five days; patience and technique decide it.
- One Day Internationals — 50 overs per side; a balance of accumulation and acceleration.
- T20 cricket — 20 overs per side; power, improvisation and match-ups dominate.
Why it matters
Selection, pacing and even field settings change completely between formats. A bowler's stock delivery in a Test — the probing fourth-stump ball — can be a free hit in a T20. Understanding the format is the first step to understanding the contest.
