The first week of the NBA season delivered a perfect team and a piece of history on the same night. The Houston Rockets beat the Milwaukee Bucks 132-100 to stay perfect at 5-0, and in New Orleans, Nikola Jokić recorded the 200th triple-double of his career as the Denver Nuggets beat the Pelicans 104-91. Add a statement night from No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg and an overtime thriller in Brooklyn, and Wednesday was the busiest night of the young season. Here is the full roundup.
Rockets 5-0: the perfect start continues
Houston's 132-100 win over Milwaukee kept the Rockets as the league's only unbeaten team at 5-0. Five games into the season, Houston have set the early pace — and they did it emphatically, winning by 32 points against a Bucks side that had no answer for them.
Jokić's 200th: history in New Orleans
The night's milestone belonged to Jokić. The three-time MVP finished with 21 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists on 8-of-13 shooting as Denver beat the winless New Orleans Pelicans 104-91 at the Smoothie King Center — his second triple-double of the season, and the 200th of his career in the regular season.
Jokić is now just the second player in NBA history to record 200 triple-doubles, joining his former Nuggets teammate Russell Westbrook, who retired after last season with 209 — the most in league history. Jokić needs ten more to pass him, and he reached 200 in just 814 games, far quicker than Westbrook, who needed 1,175. Both of Jokić's triple-doubles this season have come against the Pelicans, and the 200th was his 16th career triple-double against New Orleans — the most he has recorded against any single team.
Denver never trailed in the win, which improved the Nuggets to 2-2. Jamal Murray scored 23 points, Aaron Gordon added 15 points and 11 rebounds, and all five Nuggets starters finished in double figures. Zion Williamson scored 25 points for the Pelicans, who fell to 0-4 under first-year head coach Jamahl Mosley. The Nuggets visit Phoenix on Friday for their NBA Cup group-stage opener.
Flagg's night: 26 points in Dallas win
In Dallas, No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg continued his fast start to life in the NBA, scoring 26 points with eight assists as the Mavericks beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 120-96. It was the kind of all-around performance that explains why Flagg arrived in the league with so much expectation — scoring, creating and controlling the game against the defending champions' core.
The rest of Wednesday night
The closest game of the night came in Brooklyn, where the Boston Celtics edged the Nets 125-124 in overtime. And in Chicago, the New York Knicks beat the Bulls 133-127 in another high-scoring game. Five games, five stories — and the season is barely a week old.
