Thierno Barry extended his red-hot scoring streak with a double as Everton came from behind to beat Coventry City 3-1 and climb into fifth place in the Premier League on Friday night.
David Moyes's side trailed to Yann Gboho's goal early in the second half at Hill Dickinson Stadium, but Barry turned the game in the space of five minutes before setting up the goal that sealed a third successive victory in all competitions.
A five-minute turnaround
Coventry took the lead in the 52nd minute when Jack Rudoni's pass squeezed through Everton's marking and Gboho finished. The visitors, playing their first season back in the top flight after a 25-year absence, had a lead to defend.
It lasted four minutes. Barry headed home Vitalii Mykolenko's cross in the 56th minute to level the scores, and just past the hour mark he bundled in Tyrique George's centre at the back post to take his tally for the season to 10 goals.
Barry then turned provider nine minutes from time, clipping a pass through for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who lashed past Carl Rushworth from a tight angle to make it 3-1.
Moyes equals a club record
The victory was also a landmark night for Moyes. It was his 592nd match in charge of Everton, levelling the record set by Harry Catterick, and it came with his side playing some of their best football of the season.
The win took Everton to 16 points and fifth place, above Liverpool, ahead of the weekend's remaining fixtures. Coventry, who have now lost three of their last four matches, stay 16th on nine points, two above the relegation zone.
Lampard's complaints
The match was overshadowed by three contentious refereeing decisions, and Coventry manager Frank Lampard was unhappy after the game. He said a hair pull on Caleb Yirenkyi warranted a penalty, and also questioned a handball claim against Barry as he diverted the ball over the line for his second goal.
The rules on hair-pulling were relaxed this season, with officials also considering intent and the degree of force when deciding whether an offence has been committed. Moyes rejected the handball claim but also criticised the hair-pulling rule.
Everton, though, will not care about the controversy. Their second-half response, driven by Barry's finishing and movement, was the difference between the sides — and their climb into the top five is the story of the night.
