The Jacksonville Jaguars cruised on a wet night in Baltimore, beating the Ravens 33-10 on Thursday Night Football to kick off Week 9. Trevor Lawrence threw for 242 yards and a touchdown, and the Jaguars won their fifth game in their last six to strengthen their lead in the AFC South.
Baltimore, without their top two quarterbacks, had no answer. Undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano made his first career start and threw for only 60 yards with two interceptions, as the Ravens lost their fourth straight game and fell to 4-5.
A night to forget for Fagnano
Fagnano came into the game because Lamar Jackson and backup Tyler Huntley are both injured, with Jackson out with a right thumb injury and Huntley dealing with a right toe problem. Both are on injured reserve, leaving the 25-year-old rookie, who went undrafted out of UConn, as Baltimore's only option.
He completed 10 of 18 passes for 60 yards and two interceptions, and Baltimore took the ball out of his hands as much as possible. When he did need to make a play, it rarely went well. His second interception came in the fourth quarter, when Jourdan Lewis read his route and stepped in front of the pass with Jacksonville already leading 23-3.
Fagnano had made his debut the previous weekend against Buffalo, after Jackson broke his thumb on the first play of the game and Huntley went down in the second quarter. On that occasion he completed 10 of 19 passes for 91 yards. Thursday night was a much tougher assignment, on a short week, in the rain, against a first-place team.
Lawrence and the Jaguars stay in control
Jacksonville did not need to do anything extraordinary to beat a badly weakened Baltimore team. Lawrence completed 16 of 26 passes for 242 yards and a touchdown, including a juggling 50-yard catch-and-run score from Parker Washington before half-time.
Bhayshul Tuten and Chris Rodriguez Jr. added rushing touchdowns, and Cam Little kicked four field goals. Rodriguez's two-yard score, with just over seven minutes left in the game, came after Baltimore lost a fumble on a kick return and made it 33-3.
The Jaguars' defence was just as impressive. Montaric Brown and Jourdan Lewis had interceptions, Jalen McLeod recovered a fumble, and Jacksonville held the Ravens to only 227 total yards. For a refresher on the rules, read our American football downs explained guide.
Henry reaches another milestone
There was at least one bright spot for Baltimore. Running back Derrick Henry passed LaDainian Tomlinson to move into seventh place on the NFL's all-time regular-season rushing yards list, a remarkable achievement for the 11-year veteran.
Henry touched the ball on five of Baltimore's first seven offensive snaps, but even he could not lift an offence that had no passing threat. Justice Hill broke free for a 65-yard touchdown run 11 seconds after Rodriguez's score, which was Baltimore's first touchdown after half-time since Week 5. It merely softened the final scoreline.
The result continued Jacksonville's strong run. For their last Thursday night outing, read our report on the Packers' win over the Panthers in Week 8.
What happens next for the Ravens
Baltimore now await the arrival of Jacoby Brissett, who is joining in a trade from the Arizona Cardinals, as they try to prevent their season from falling apart completely. With their top two quarterbacks on injured reserve, Brissett's experience is badly needed.
The Ravens have lost four straight games, and their season is slipping away. Their defence kept them in games earlier in the year, but without a functioning passing attack they cannot score enough points to win.
Jacksonville, meanwhile, keep rolling. Head coach Liam Coen credited the short-week preparation after the game, and the Jaguars now sit at 6-2 with a clear lead in the AFC South. For the latest college picture, see our report on the College Football Playoff rankings.
